Game Genres

Genres The shooter genre is a subgenre of the action genre, which will test the player's spatial awareness, reflexes when in danger, and speed to react to stuff in either single player or multiplayer environments. Shooters come in different versions such as third person shooters and first person shooters which both use different perspectives of the players view. A key feature of the genre is having weapons to shoot with such as guns, typically you shoot enemies like AI or sometimes other players if it’s a multiplayer game. Sometimes you are shooting just 1 enemy, maybe 2 or 3 or even hordes of enemies. A typical horde enemy used are zombies and robots for these can look the same so not as much models are needed as well as it makes sense for there to be a lot of zombies or robots in a massive group. Shooters are often confused with the “run and gun” genre which are quite different with run and gun mostly being 2D games like “Cuphead”. Some examples of First person shooters are: Overwatch, DOOM Eternal Mand Bioshock. Some examples of Third person shooters are: Fortnite, Plants vs zombies garden warfare, and GTA V.

Role playing games are are a genre where the player controls and chooses actions of the character or party members in games. Typically in RPGs you control some characters who follow a story and you will fight enemies along the way who will most likely grant you Xp to level up your characters. You are in control and you get to choose the next paths, the actions, and even change the story itself which may give you multiple endings. Sometimes you will get a choice, for example you can choose to help someone or leave them alone and this might change the story depending on what you do. RPGs are mostly known as games where you get to select an attack each round as if it was a card game however the RPG genre has expanded massively to become games that can be open world. Some newer RPG examples are Fallout, Skyrim, Dark souls. Some classic RPG examples are Pokémon, Earthbound/Mother, Final Fantasy, Persona.

Racing games are a video game genre where the player will take part in a racing competition which can be on any land, water, air or any other landscape. They can be realistic or totally crazy. They can also be third person or first person and some games let you switch between the views. Some games consist of Racing against AI or other players if your playing online or local multiplayer. Some games let you change your car which can sometimes change your stats like speed or drift, this means you have to be more smart to get a better car than your opponents. Some examples of realistic racing games are: Forza, Need For Speed, Real Racing. Some examples of crazy racing games are: Mario Kart, Garfield Kart, Crash Team Racing.

A simulation game is a game that attempts to recreate something and put you the player in it. It can be a realistic or fictional world. Some examples are The Sims, farming simulator, Stardew Valley.

Strategy games are quite similar to real life board games. They are usually games that involve using strategies to beat your opponent. Some of these games could even be played in real life with the right equipment like you would with a card or board game. Some examples are: Hearthstone, Civilisation, Starcraft, Plants vs Zombies.
